Opening a Merchant Account for Recurring Payment Models

Getting a high-risk merchant account for your subscription business is straightforward with FastoPayments. With over a decade of experience in recurring and high-risk payment processing, we simplify onboarding with fast approval, secure integration, and expert support tailored to your business model.

Step 1.

Research payment gateway options

Look for a provider that already works with subscription businesses like yours and supports your billing model, whether that is free trials, monthly plans or annual prepayments. Ask how it handles renewals, card updates and failed payments, not only what it charges.

Step 2.

Prepare your application

Subscription businesses are often treated as high risk, so expect extra checks. You will need company documents, ID for directors and owners, and processing history if you have it. See the requirements checklist. The acquirer also reviews your website, pricing, trial and renewal terms, and how customers cancel.

Step 3.

Start accepting payments

Once your merchant account is approved, you connect your checkout and start taking recurring payments. The first payment is authenticated with 3D Secure, renewals run as merchant-initiated transactions, and customers can pay in different currencies and from different countries.

Payment Integrations

FastoPayments seamlessly integrates with popular platforms like WooCommerce and Shopify. Every business is unique, which is why our API allows you to customize your payment gateway according to your specific needs.

Whether you prefer a host page integration or server-to-server setup, FastoPayments’ payment API ensures that your high-risk e-commerce payment processing is optimized for efficiency and future-proofed for continued success.

  • YOUR QUESTIONS

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a high-risk merchant account for subscription-based businesses?

A high-risk merchant account for subscription businesses is built to support recurring billing in industries that face increased chargeback risk or regulatory complexity.

This includes SaaS platforms, adult content creators, video streaming services, membership communities, digital marketplaces, e-learning platforms, and coaching services. These business models often struggle with approval from traditional providers. FastoPayments offers subscription payment processing that supports ongoing transactions, protects against disputes, and adapts to your specific industry needs.

Why are recurring subscription models considered high-risk by payment providers?

Recurring billing introduces unique risks, such as customer disputes from forgotten renewals, free trials converting to paid plans, and unclear cancellation terms.

When combined with industries like adult content, wellness, or coaching, the risk of chargebacks increases further. Payment processors categorize these models as high-risk due to refund exposure, content restrictions, and international customer bases. FastoPayments is experienced in managing this complexity and provides solutions designed to protect revenue while ensuring compliance.

What features matter most in a payment processor for subscription businesses?

For businesses relying on recurring revenue, essential features include flexible billing cycles, automatic retries for failed payments, fraud filters, chargeback prevention tools, and global payment support.

Whether you’re running a SaaS platform, adult subscription site, streaming service, or a membership-based coaching business, your processor should also offer secure card storage, multi-currency billing, and customizable checkout flows. FastoPayments delivers all of this through a single high-risk-ready solution that supports long-term growth.

How long does it take to set up a high-risk merchant account for a subscription model?

It depends mainly on how complete your documents and website are when you apply, and on whether your model needs card scheme registration, for example free trials under MCC 5968. FastoPayments helps subscription merchants across adult, education, digital products, and B2B services prepare for fast approval by guiding you through compliance, KYC, and onboarding.

We ensure that your payment system is up and running as quickly as possible so you can focus on scaling your recurring revenue.

How can subscription-based businesses reduce chargebacks and failed payments?

To minimize lost revenue, businesses should combine proactive communication with advanced billing tools. Send reminders before billing cycles, allow easy cancellations, use clear billing descriptors, and implement retry logic for failed payments.

Platforms in high-risk verticals such as adult content, e-learning, or health subscriptions benefit from FastoPayments’ real-time fraud prevention, card updater services, and automated dispute response tools. These features help maintain healthy chargeback ratios and strengthen customer trust over time.

When a subscription business counts as high risk

Recurring billing on its own is not high risk. Acquirers look at how you sell and what you sell:

    • Free trials and negative option offers. A trial that turns into a paid plan unless the customer cancels puts you in MCC 5968, which Visa treats as high-integrity risk and Mastercard requires to be registered when physical products are involved.
    • Your vertical. Subscriptions for adult content, dating or nutraceuticals carry the risk of that industry on top of recurring billing.
    • Prepaid plans. Annual or lifetime plans mean the acquirer carries the refund risk for months of service not yet delivered.
    • Stored cards. Every renewal is charged without the customer at the checkout, so forgotten or unrecognised charges turn into disputes.

Stored credentials, SCA and merchant-initiated transactions

In the EEA and the UK, strong customer authentication applies when the customer sets up the subscription online, so the first payment is normally authenticated with 3D Secure. Later charges you start under that agreement, with no action from the customer, are merchant-initiated transactions (MITs) and fall outside SCA, as the European Banking Authority has confirmed.

The card schemes' stored credential rules make this work: the first payment is flagged as a customer-initiated transaction that stores the card with the customer's consent, and each renewal is flagged as an MIT that refers back to it. If the flags are missing, issuers may decline renewals or ask for authentication the customer is not there to complete. A plan change made while the customer is logged in is a customer-initiated payment and may need SCA again.

    Account updater and network tokens

Some churn is involuntary: a renewal fails because the card expired or was replaced, not because the customer wanted to leave. Two tools help:

    • Account updater services from Visa and Mastercard pass new card numbers and expiry dates from issuers to your provider before the next renewal.
    • Network tokens replace the card number with a scheme token that stays valid when the card is reissued, and you no longer store the card number itself.

    Dunning and retry logic

    • Read the decline code first. Visa groups decline codes into categories and does not allow retries on codes where the issuer will never approve, such as lost, stolen or closed cards. Mastercard merchant advice codes tell you whether to try again.
    • Retry within the limits. Visa caps reattempts of the same transaction, and excessive retries can bring scheme fees and hurt your approval rates.
    • Tell the customer. Send an email or SMS with a link to update the card, and keep a short grace period before access stops.

Cancellation rules in the UK and EU

The UK's Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 creates a new regime for subscription contracts. The government plans to bring it into force in January 2027, so check the final regulations before then. Once in force, businesses must give key information before sign-up, send reminders before renewals and before free or discounted periods end, let customers cancel in a straightforward way (online if they signed up online) and offer cooling-off periods at the start and after some renewals. In the EU, most distance contracts already carry a 14-day right of withdrawal, and some member states add their own cancellation rules.

Dispute reason codes for recurring payments

    CodeTypical cause
Visa 13.2 Cancelled Recurring TransactionCharged after cancelling, or cancellation was hard to find
Visa 13.5 MisrepresentationTrial or renewal terms not clearly disclosed
    Visa 10.4 Other Fraud, Card-AbsentCustomer doesn't recognise a renewal
Mastercard 4841 Cancelled Recurring or Digital GoodsCharged after cancelling
Mastercard 4837 No Cardholder AuthorisationCustomer denies making the payment

Keep records of consent, reminders sent and cancellation requests to answer these disputes, and use a recognisable billing descriptor. Every dispute counts towards Visa VAMP, so see how to prevent chargebacks.
